M.Sc., INDUSTRIAL BIOTECHNOLOGY

The PG course is run under Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and spread over four semesters. The course comprises of core subjects involving both theory and practical, elective subjects and supportive subject. The total credits for the course is 90 out of which 64 credits for core subjects, 12 for electives and 6 for supportive courses. The remaining 8 credits have been allocated to research activities of which 6 are for Project and 2 credits for summer training. The core subject deals with microbial diversity, physiology, biochemistry, genetics, genetic engineering, bioprocess engineering, food biotechnology, agro-industrial biotechnology, biopharmaceuticals, bio-nanotechnology industrial pollution control and biosafety, bioethics &IPR.

The elective subjects are Computational Biology, Nanobiotechnology and Immunology and Immunotechniques. The selection of supportive course is left to the discretion of the students to choose from subjects offered by other departments. To name some are Biofarming, Databases and sequence analysis, Chemistry in day to day life, yoga, etc. The Industrial training component in the curriculum has been designed for the students to gain the exposure of recent research developments undergoing in various Institutions of India. The fourth semester has been dedicated to mould the students for future research career during which they have to carry out a research project in the department itself or in any other nationally and internationally reputed R&D institutes or industries. The department offers Fermentation technology, Food Biotechnology and Clinical Microbiology subjects as supportive courses to the students of other disciplines.

The department has a very good laboratory of international standard that can provide practical training for the students in the fields of microbial techniques, genetic engineering in microbes, bioprocess engineering, clinical biotechnology and neutraceuticals. The department also provides opportunities for the students to horn their skills in both administration and extension by encouraging their participation in “BIOGALAXIA”, a student association of the department. The Biogalaxians are spreading their searching gaze by organizing seminars which provides them platform for exercising their managerial skills and acquire multidisciplinary knowledge.

Apart from improving their academic skills, the Biogalaxians are encouraged to realize their role in societal improvement by conducting several social events like tree planting, blood donation and organ donation camps. Invited lectures by eminent scientists in various fields of Science being arranged regularly throughout the year enlighten the students with newer concepts of Science.

Admission

For securing admission in PG course the aspiring candidates have to appear for an entrance examination which will be conducted generally in the month of May every year. Based on the performance in the entrance examination (60%) and University examinations (40%), around 20 candidates will be selected. In the selection, Tamil Nadu Government Reservation policy will be adopted.
