National Service Scheme of Bharathiar University is conducting annual programmes and special camping activities regularly.  In addition to this, extension activities such as assisting District administration, City Police and other Government departments are provided wherever the services of our volunteers and Programme Officers are required.  There are 84 Colleges, 250 Units and 25000 volunteers are under NSS umbrella at present.  The basic aim of the scheme is to strengthen self-discipline and confidence, service mind and leadership quality in addition to academic assignment among the youth.

            Bharathiar University NSS is well known for its community services through extension activities such as organizing Personality Development Programmes, National Integration Camps, Blood Donation Camp, Medical Camps, Rally and awareness programme on AIDS Control, Organ Donation, Importance of Literacy and reduction of schools dropouts, Environmental Awareness Programmes, Tree plantation etc.

2010-2011

Assistance by NSS volunteers to Police Department

           On the request of Coimbatore City Police Commissioner, around 4000 NSS volunteers of
Affiliated Colleges were requested to assist Police Personnel to regulate the general public on the eve of Tamil Conference. Large number of NSS volunteers on turn basis, continuously helping the Police Department during festival season (Ramzon, Deepavali, Pongal, Christmas etc.) in regulating the traffic and also on request wherever they need.

National Award

           For the year 2009-10 Bharathiar University NSS Cell (Dr.V.Alagar Ramanujam, Government Arts College, Ooty) received the Indira Gandhi National Award for Best Programme Officer.  It is the highest award for NSS activities.

Republic Day Parade – 2011

            Bharathiar University NSS got the pride and golden opportunity of leading a team of 85 volunteers from Tamilnadu to take part in the Republic Day Parade Contingent Leader was from Bharathiar University NSS Cell.

Youth Carnival
Illavattam – Red Ribbon Club

           Red Ribbon Club a unit of Tamilnadu state Aids Control Society – Bharathiar University Level RRC Youth Programme was conducted during July and August 2010.  Our University RRC volunteers won first prizes in 5 competitions conducted by TANSACS at Chennai. University Level Celebration was inaugurated by Justice S.Baskaran, District Judge, Coimbatore.

NSS Day Celebration – 23.9.2010

            NSS Day Celebration and Youth Leadership Orientation Training and Cultural Programmes were conducted.  Shiri.G.P.Sajith Babu, Youth Officer and Head, NSS Regional Centre, Chennai addressed the participants.  The programme was inaugurated by Dr.C.Swaminathan, Vice-Chancellor, Bharathiar University.

Breast Cancer Awareness Programme held on 09.10.2010

                This programme was inaugurated by our Honorable Vice-Chancellor Dr.C.Swaminathan, Bharathiar University in the presence of NSS Co-ordinator.  In this programme around in 1500 NSS Volunteers and 150 NSS Programme Officers involved for awareness activities. This Programme was jointly organized by Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Oncology and Research, Coimbatore and NSS Cell of Bharathiar University. On the occasion Website was hosted and pamphlets were issued by Sri Ramakrishna Hospital.

Desilting of Tank by Campus Unit Volunteers

            NSS volunteers of Campus Unit undertook the desilting and strengthening the bed of tank situated in the University Campus  which is considered as a major source of drinking water for wild animals especially elephant, deer etc.  After the work, the tank is able to store the rain water for feeding the animals which has controlled the entry of elephant into University Campus.

Special Camp – 2010-11

            During 2010-11, all the 84 Units(100percent) of the Affiliated Colleges successfully conducted the Special Camp.

Orientation to New Volunteers

            NSS Programme Co-ordinator Dr.K.Govindarajalu has requested the Colleges that all the 250 Units have to conduct the Orientation Programme for first year volunteers.  It has been considered as an important assignment by the Programme Officers to make the students to understand the motto, objectives and significance of NSS Programme. 

Programme Officers Meet

            As per the instruction of the NSS Regional Centre and State Liaison Officer, Programme Officers meet was conducted on 10.8.2011. This programme was presided by Dr.C.Swaminathan, Vice-Chacellor. Er. R. Elangovan, Executive Engineer, Environment Cell Division, PWD, Coimbatore and Dr.Mohammed Ali, TANSACS, Coimbatore oriented the P.Os.   It facilitated our cell to review the previous year work and finalise the proposed activities for the whole year.

Independence Day -15.08.2011

            Independence Day was celebrated in the university campus on 15.8.2011.   Dr.C.Swaminathan, Vice-Chancellor hoissted the national flag.  University students performed cultural events on the occassion.  NSS volunteers were also actively participated in the march fast and cultural events.

Tree Plantation in Bharathiar University Campus

            Under Green and Clean Campus Programme 65 Tree Saplings were planted on 15.8.2011. 1000 Tree Saplings were planted on25.8.2011.

Parthenium Eradication

            As per the instruction given by Chief Secretary, Government of Tamilnadu, Secretary, Department of Agriculture and District Collector, Parthenium eradication programme was inaugurated in the University Campus by Dr.C.Swaminathan, Vice-Chancellor on 2.10.2011. Likewise, the NSS Units of affiliated Colleges were asked to undertake parthenium eradications activities during regular activities and Special Camping in Village.

Communal Harmony Run

            1000 NSS volunteers participated in the Communal Harmony Run Organized by CRPF and Other Organization on 27.8.2011.

South Zone Pre-RD Selection

            Pre-RD Selection of the Volunteers Conducted on 15.9.2011.  Shiri.G.P.Sajith Babu, Youth Officer and Head and Dr.Rajasekaran, NCC Officer, PSG College of Arts & Science, conducted the selection.

Seminar on Youth Leadership and Personality Development
           

           In order to train and motivate the NSS Volunteers of affiliated Colleges a seminar on Youth Leadership and Personality Development was organized on 28th and  29th Oct. 2011.
           The Seminar was inaugurated by Thiru. M.Karunagaran, District Collector, Coimbatore. It was presided by Dr.C.Swaminathan, Vice-Chancellor Bharathiar University. Dr.Kavidasan delivered Key-note address to the volunteers.  On the second day cultural events were given by the volunteers in the theme of Patriotism, Nation integration, Self-Confidence, Social Service, Skill development etc.

Indira Gandhi National Award
