ABOUT US

The Department of Zoology was started in 1973 as one of the departments of Madras University Post Graduate center at Coimbatore under the headship of (Late) Prof.G. Sundararajulu. When Bharathiar University was formed in 1982, the Department of Zoology became a part of it. Ever since its inception it has been promoting teaching, research and extension activities in the field of Zoology in this part of the state.

The Department has two Professor, one Reader and four Lecturers, in addition to two technical officers and three administrative staff. The Department has the following specialization Human Genetics, Entomology, Toxicology, Aquaculture, Crustacean Biology, Conservation Biology and Proteomics and Molecular Cell Physiology. The Department offers M.Sc., Animal Science, M.Sc., Animal Biotechnology, M.Tech Molecular Biology and Human Genetics and M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs in Zoology.

The Department is equipped well with laboratory facilities to realize the goals of research activities. We also offer extension services, which include Human Genetic and Cytogenetic studies, Genetic Counselling, Vector Biology and Forecasting, Environmental Toxicology and Impact Assessment, Live Feed Culture, Prawn Culture, Conservation Education and Proteomic techniques. We have very good rapport with neighboring institutions like Coimbatore Medical College, P.S.G. Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Coimbatore, Primary Health Centers, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Sugarcane Breeding, Forensic Laboratory and all colleges affiliated to this University. Since its inception, the Department has produced more than 127 Ph.D. and 200 M.Phil. degrees. All are well placed in their respective fields of research in National and International levels.

The Department has conducted many National and International Seminars and Refresher Courses for college teachers sponsored by UGC. Both faculty and students have published several papers in National and International journals. Faculty members are operating projects funded by various central agencies. Collaborative research schemes are also being operated in the department. Participation in the National and International conferences are regular features of the department. Faculty members are deputed to attend International conferences conducted by the University and Government of India. Unit of Human Genetics is conducting regularly during summer " On the Job training programme on the Human Cytogenetic Techniques to the college students.
