The Department of Physics is one of the oldest departments in this University. This department was started in the year 1974 by the University of Madras as post graduate study center and later in the year 1982 after the establishment of Bharathiar University by Tamilnadu Government, this department became the Department of Physics of Bharathiar University.

In 2007, Bharathiar University, constituted different schools and this department has become a constituent unit of School of Physical Sciences.

Initially, the department has taken up teaching and research program in Thin films and subsequently more specialization were added. At present the department is strong both in experimental and theoretical research. In experimental Physics we have
1. Thin film Physics and Nanomaterials
2. Crystal growth

In the theoretical Physics we have,
1. Molecular Quantum mechanics
2. Nuclear Physics.

The department has successfully completed projects worth about 2 Crores funded by agencies like UGC, DST, BRNS, DAE, ISRO, DRDO etc., More than 80 students have got their Ph.D. degree and more than 200 students have got their M.Phil. degree in the department. Around 25 students have got CSIR - direct Senior Research Fellowships over the period of 12 years. Around 500 research papers have been published in national and international journals.

Around Rs. 50 lakhs worth of projects are currently being carried out by our faculty members. The department has collaboration with national laboratories and Universities like, IGCAR Kalpakkam, BARC Mumbai, IISc Bangalore, IOP Bhubaneswar, Punjab University, Chandigarh. In international level we have collaboration with Harward University USA, University of Bristol UK, Tohuku University, Tokyo University, Hokkaido University, Japan, Sungkyunkwan University, South Korea, University of Giessen, Germany and some other universities in Korea and China. Many of our Ph.D. students were well placed in local and abroad and some of them are doing Post Doctoral research in the Universities of USA, UK, Finland, Japan, Korea, France and Germany. Some of the students are employed in government laboratories and some of them are heading various research departments of the reputated colleges.

Department of Science and Technology, Government of India has recognized this department as FIST sponsored department and sanctioned Rs. 20 lakhs for the creation of central computer lab in the first phase.

Recently, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India has sanctioned Rs. 1.75 crores under the FIST programme for creating state of the art lab facilities under the second phase.

The research work carried out in the department has been published in good impact factored journals resulting in more than 1000 citations of our work.

The department has conducted many national level conferences and meetings.

50 % of our M.Sc. students pursue M.Phil and Ph.D programs in India. 10 % of students go abroad for Ph.D. programme and other students go for computer related jobs and as a scientist in national institutions and some go to teaching profession.

Some of our faculty members were received the national and international recognitions for their outstanding research.

COURSES OFFERED:

M.Sc Programme

For our M.Sc Programme we receive approximately 400 applications every year. The selection is based on an entrance exam and the marks scored in their B.Sc. degree. Till last year, the student strength in this program was 12. In this academic year it has been increased to 20. Students from different southern states of India were given admission to this program. We adopt the syllabi framed by University Grants Commission for this course. The syllabi are regularly revised keeping up to date information. Our M.Sc., students are given first hand experience in using advanced research level equipments during their advanced practical classes. The regular weekly seminars and meetings conducted in the department by the experts helps to motivate our students to pursue higher education in research level. Every year some of our students participate in summer schools organized by various national institutes and universities such as Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, IGCAR, Kalpakkam, IUCAA, Pune etc., Few students spent two months at National Laboratories for Summer project during their first year. 60% of our students after completing their course opt for M. Phil. and Ph.D. programmes in India and abroad. 10% of our students are employed in computer related jobs. Some of our students cleared Group I exams conducted by the State government. Some students go to teaching profession. Every year few students clear Gate/Net exams also. From the academic year 2007-08 onwards, our University offers a compulsory P. G. Diploma course along with the P. G. degree. In our department we offer a P. G. Diploma course in Nano science.

M.Phil. Programme

Our Department offers regular M.Phil Programme. Every year we receive on the average 50 applications for this course. The selection is based on personal interview and marks secured in P. G. degree. The students can opt for the various specialisation offered in the department. The degree is awarded to the candidates after their successful completion of Part-I exams and Part-II public Viva-Voce exam. Most our students after completion of this course, join for Ph.D programme in college. Some of the students join as faculty in arts and science and engineering colleges.

Ph. D. Programme

The Ph.D. Programme is offered in the department right from its inception. Regularly around 15 to 20 students apply for this programme every year. The selection is based on personal interview. The students can choose their own specialization. Normally research scholars used to take three to four years to complete the Ph.D degree. During their research period, scholars usually present their research finding in the National and International conferences and they should give department seminars and Pre thesis submission seminars. The concerned guide monitors the progress of the research scholars regularly. Most of the students get stifund from the University or from project or from the CSIR for their research work. We have good experimental and computer facilities available for the research scholars. Before the award of the doctoral degree, the thesis is evaluated by foreign and Indian experts and the student would defend the work done in a public Viva-Voce exam. After completion of the Ph. D degree most of our students go to abroad for doing their post doctoral work. Some of the students go for teaching profession.

P.G.Diploma in Nanotechnology
