The M.Sc., Medical Physics Programme was started in the Department of Physics in the academic year 2002 – 2003 in collaboration with G. Kuppusamy Naidu Memorial Hospital (GKNM Hospital), Coimbatore.
The approval for RSO level - III Certificate was obtained from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai in 2004.
The department of Medical Physics was created in the year 2007 and now this department is a constituent of School of Physical Sciences. The approval for M.Phil and Ph. D research programs in Medical Physics has been obtained in 2009.
Presently, the Department of Medical Physics has two faculty members in Bharathiar University and four faculty members from GKNM hospital in addition; two more faculty members from Department of Physics also support this course.
Our students are exposed to field training in various cancer hospitals all over India. Almost all of our students who completed their M.Sc., (Medical Physics) Programme were employed as Medical Physicists and Radiation Safety Officer in cancer hospitals throughout the India.
Some of our students are working in WHO and few of them are pursuing research program in US.
