| The Department of Mathematics was established in 1978 as the Department of Applied Mathematics in the erstwhile Post Graduate Centre of University of Madras. Later in 1982 when Bharathiar University was formed by the Government of Tamil Nadu the Department came under the Bharathiar University. In 2002 the Department was recognized by UGC as a DRS Center for a period of five years under its Special Assistance Program (SAP). The status has been extended to the next five years through UGC DRS Phase II (2007-2012). This is the first Department in this University to get the second phase. The Department offers M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes in Mathematics with more emphasis on Applied Mathematics. The areas of specialization of the faculty members are Partial Differential Equations, Fluid Dynamics, Control Theory and Abstract Differential Equations. The Department is sanctioned with seven faculty members in different cadres. Currently the Department has two permanent faculty members. The members of the faculty have won several distinctions and awards. They have been participating regularly in seminars and conferences and also visited foreign countries. They do research by getting funded research projects from NBHM, CSIR and DST. The Department is getting a separate library grant of Rs. 5 lakhs every year from the NBHM and we have a good collection of foreign books in our library. It has an international standard smart class room facility to give lectures and seminars. The Department has an air conditioned computer lab with workstation. It also provides 24 hour internet facilities to all the faculty members and research scholars. During the last 30 years, the Department has achieved
remarkable progress in research activity. The faculty members of
the Department have published more than 450 research papers in international
and national journals so far. Several of them are published in Science
Citation Indexed Journals. Research Scholars and Faculty members
are regularly presenting their output in their respective specialized
conferences. Due to this contribution all of our full time PhD research
scholars have obtained Post Doctoral positions in foreign countries. Address :
